Drive along the coastal road of Attica and pass by the beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, on the way, you will see the wild coastline of Attica and few small islands of the Saronic Gulf. Cape Sounion is only 45 miles (70 kilometers) from Athens, making it the perfect lazy afternoon destination. It is the southernmost point of Attica, where the marvelous Temple of Poseidon stands on top of a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea. The view across the Aegean is superb with one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the world., extending all the way to Kea and the Peloponnese on a clear day. The Temple of Poseidon was built in 44 B.C., and many of its original Doric columns are still standing. One of the columns has a graffiti left by Lord Byron in the early 1800s. Athens is home to two UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES, the ACROPOLIS of Athens and the medieval DAPHNI Monastery. The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by ancient monuments and works of art.The city also retains Roman and Byzantine monuments as well as a smaller number of Ottoman monuments.
Athens is a city of different aspects. A bustlling vivid city which balances harmoniously the old and the new age. A walk around the famous historic triangle (Plaka,Thission,Psyri),the old neighbourhoods reveal the coexistence of different eras. Old mansions, well preserved ones and other worn down by time. Luxurious department stores and small intimate shops, fancy restaurants and traditional tavernas all have their place in this city.
