private tour of HYDRA ISLAND FULL DAY

Hydra is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea between the Saronic Gulf and the Argolic Gulf. In the ancient times, the island was known as Hydrea, derived from the Greek word for "water", which was a reference to the springs on the island. Also, some believe it was the home of the Hydra, the Horrible Monster Heracles killed, thus its name.
In this tour we will focus on the town of Hydra Island, which is the unique settlement of the island. It counts some 3000 permanent residents. Garbage trucks are the only motor vehicles on the island, as cars or motorcycles are not allowed by law. Donkeys, bicycles, and water taxis provide public transportation.
The Town of Hydra Island is amphitheatrically. Arranged within a close bay situated approximately at the middle of the northern coast of the island. Also, it is surrounded by bare rocks and steep mountains. The first impression of the visitor, as the ship reaches the port, is the image of the high impressive Old Mansions overlooking the Town of Hydra Island.
Stone mansions surround the small bay that distinguish for their austere style and earth colours. The highest mansion right at the port hosts the Historical Archives of Hydra, a lovely museum that organizes art exhibitions, festivals and seminars in summer. Other such mansions survive all over the town and have turned into hotels or public buildings, such as the Koundouriotis Mansion that hosts an ethnological collection or the Tsamadou Mansion that houses the School of Merchant Marine.

Hydra Island
Hydra... one of the Saronic Islands of Greece located in the Aegean Sea between the Saronic gulf and the Argolic gulf. It is seperated from the Peloponesse by a narrow strip of water. There is one main town, known simply as 'Hydra Port'. It consists of a crescent-shaped harbour around which is centered a strand of restaurants shops markets and galleries that cater to tourists and locals ( Hydriots ). Hydra is one of the most picturesque islands of Greece. The charming town amazes visitors at first sight. The special thing about Hydra Island is that motor vehicles are not allowed and all transport is done by foot by boat or riding a donkey. Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbour area.
Kaminia and Mandraki are also picturesque villages while relaxing beaches are found all around the island. Agios Nikolaos, Bisti, Kaminia and Vlichos are fabulous beaches to swim. If you like trekking note that many trekking paths start from the Town and lead to monasteries in the center of the island.
This port is one of the most romantic places for an evening drink, a long promenade and lunch and/or dinner at many restaurants and tavernas.
